Berms & Curbs

Residential Requests for Berms and Curbs

The Township of Wyckoff does not install curbs. Individual homeowners may install Belgium Block or concrete curbs at their expense.  Road opening permits are required and can be applied for at the Building Department. The more linear feet constructed simultaneously, the lower the overall price, so consider getting your neighbors involved and completing a curb project jointly for your best pricing.

All resident requests for berms (NOT CURBS) are reviewed by the DPW Manager and the Township Engineer for necessity and need to meet specific standards to qualify.  Once installed, the town will continue to maintain them.  It is essential to understand that berms are not permanent and susceptible to vehicle traffic and snowplow damage.

Berms are installed to prevent the road’s edge from deteriorating due to water run-off.

There must be proof of rainwater run-off that resulted in apparent erosion and rutting.

If the lawn, flower beds or shrubbery plantings are not showing signs of erosion or rutting the area is not a candidate for a berm.

Flooding of homes in low-lying areas due to runoff from the street

If the residence’s lawn is noted to be “low” in areas, resulting in it being below the asphalt line, it would be the homeowner’s responsibility to add soil to these areas to raise the lawn higher than the street.

Berms are not intended to prevent cars from parking on lawns as cars driving over them easily break them. Snow stakes (fiberglass) and markers are very effective in keeping vehicles off your grass and are very affordable. If there is an issue with cars parking on your lawn, it is suggested that you call the Police Department, and they can assist with a property damage report.

Berms are a last resort to solve water issues.

Existing berms are maintained out of necessity.
