Do I have to keep the drainage or sewer easement on my property open and free of bushes, trees, swing sets, sheds, etc.?

A substantial portion of Wyckoff’s sanitary sewer system and storm sewer system
runs through private property (rear yards and side lawns) and many of these sewer lines
exist on formal easements. These sewer lines must remain readily accessible for
repairs and maintenance, particularly on an emergency basis. We never know when
work will be necessary to correct a problem in our home or that of a neighbor.
If a sewer easement runs through your property, please ensure that there can be no
obstructions which limit access. Please ensure manholes are visible and
unencumbered. Obstructions we have encountered include buildings, sheds, large
plantings, fences, walls, pools, patios, other similar structures. Our Building Department
allows construction permits for fences to be located on the perimeter or through an
easement only if: 1) the homeowner signs a statement allowing the Township to remove
the fence for an emergency or repair work; and 2) the homeowner bears the cost of
reinstalling the fence.
Please consider these requirements before you begin a building or landscaping project.
