Township of Wyckoff continues to accept Affordable Housing Applications

Wyckoff Affordable Housing applications continue to be accepted for affordable housing in the Township of Wyckoff. Applicants may apply for purchase units and/or rental units.

Affordable housing allows families earning below 80% of the median income level to acquire housing at prices they can afford. Households with the following income levels and based on the number of persons in a family may qualify: 1 person - $46,635; 2 people - $53,297; 3 people - $59,960; 4 people - $66,622; 5 people - $71,952; 6 people - $77,281. Households making ABOVE these income levels are NOT ELIGIBLE. The Wyckoff affordable housing units are for persons or families of limited income. Those interested in purchasing re-sale units must have five percent of the purchase price available for a down payment and qualify for a mortgage. Unfortunately, Wyckoff cannot guarantee the availability of an affordable housing unit for each certified household.

Those wishing to apply for low and moderate income housing units may pick up an application Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Distribution is being handled by Susan Schilstra at the Planning Board office - Room 110 in Memorial Town Hall located at Scott Plaza in the Township of Wyckoff or visit our website at www.wyckoff-nj.com (go to Online Forms, click on Affordable Housing Application).

Single Stream Recycling and Additional Enhancement to Recycling Program

Single Stream recycling refers to a system where all paper fibers (paper bags, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, junk mail, telephone books, shoe boxes, cereal boxes, gift boxes, soft cover books and corrugated cardboard) AND containers (glass-all colors, aluminum, metal and Plastics #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, and #7) (except styrofoam which is sometimes labeled #6) are allowed to be placed together in one container for collection instead of in separate collection containers. The intent is to encourage more residents to recycle by increasing the convenience of recycling. For a comprehensive list of household items and how to dispose of them, consult the Reference Table of Recyclables at Wyckoff on the Web, www.wyckoff-nj.com.

ENHANCEMENTS:

More Collections

1. Every other week curbside recycling collections. (Previously a resident's recyclables were collected twice a month.)

Single Ply Cardboard

2. Single-ply cardboard is included in the list of recyclables that can be placed at the curb for the every-other-week recyclable conditions or brought to the Recycling Center at 476 West Main Street.

Residents may include single-ply cardboard such as shoe boxes, cereal boxes and gift boxes with their corrugated cardboard for recycling. Adding single-ply cardboard to the current recycling program is intended to remove this material from the household waste stream and reduce the amount of garbage sent to landfills.

Pizza boxes are not included. Pizza boxes are made from corrugated cardboard, however, the cardboard becomes soiled with grease, cheese, and other foods once the pizza has been placed in the box. Once soiled, the cardboard cannot be recycled because the paper fibers cannot be separated from the oils during the pulping process. Paper and cardboard soiled with food oils are the primary reason that these items cannot be recycled.

Plastic Food Containers #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, and #7 (except styrofoam which is sometimes labeled #6)

3. Plastic food containers #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, and #7 (except styrofoam which is sometimes labeled #6) are included in the list of recyclables that can be placed at the curb for the every other week curbside collection or brought to the Recycling Center at 476 West Main Street.

Empty yogurt, cottage cheese and margarine containers can be placed with recycling instead of ending up in the garbage and taking up space in a landfill. Plastic food containers with a recycling symbol from 1 to 7 (except styrofoam which is sometimes labeled #6) are accepted for recycling. (Due to a previously adopted state law, all plastic food containers must have a recycling symbol with a number from 1 to 7 indicating the type of plastic resin it is made of.) In addition to the recyclable items mentioned, some of the other recyclable items that will be accepted are: frozen whipped topping containers, some plastic storage containers, medicine bottles (be sure to remove the label or cross out any personal information) and some take-out or fruit containers. Be sure to check the symbol on the bottom of the container before discarding. Plastic pipes used for toys, sporting equipment and plumbing jobs are not accepted at the recycling market and therefore, cannot be recycled at this time.

The Wyckoff Environmental Commission suggests the following ways that residents can remove items from their household waste stream and thereby help reduce the volume of garbage hauled to landfills.

  • Bags from groceries and retail purchases should be returned to the grocery store. Or better still, consider purchasing reusable bags to take with you when you go shopping.
  • Buy only what you can use. Less packaging means less waste.
  • Purchase items in recyclable packaging such as glass or plastic containers.
  • Reuse packaging such as glass containers to store leftovers.
  • Buy products with recycled materials and less packaging.
  • Donate serviceable items to charity.
  • Compost grass clipping and other vegetative waste.
  • Packing peanuts may be brought to the UPS store located at 637 Wyckoff Ave where they are reused.
  • Metal hangers should be returned to the cleaners or taken to the recycling center.
  • Donate or recycle TVs, computers or other electronics. Many retailers have begun recycling programs for these items. Or, you can bring them to the Bergen Regionalized computer and electronics collection days held four times annually.
  • Donate or return old cell phones to retailers.
  • Recycle your household hazardous waste (paints, fertilizer, etc.) at Bergen County Regionalized Recycling Days.
  • Recycle your old tires at the Bergen County Regionalized Recycling Days.

A comprehensive list of items and how you can dispose of them can be found on Wyckoff on the Web (www.wyckoff-nj.com) under Garbage and Recycling.

Frequently Asked Questions about Single Stream Recycling

What is single stream recycling?

Single stream recycling means that the following recyclables; plastics #1 through #7 (except styrofoam which is sometimes labeled #6), glass: green, clear and brown, aluminum beverage containers, steel food cans, newsprint, corrugated cardboard, single-ply cardboard and brown paper bags can be put into one container.

Will the recycling collection schedule remain the same?

Yes. The every other week recycling collection schedule will remain the same. Please refer to the municipal calendar or visit our website at www.wyckoff-nj.com for the recycling collection days.

How will this benefit residents?

Residents can place their mixed recyclables in one container; no separation needed. It is easier and more convenient. This will encourage residents to recycle more which benefits the environment and diverts recyclables from landfills.

Will residents need to purchase a new container?

No. The mixed recyclables must be placed in an open, reusable sturdy 30 gallon container with no liner that does not exceed 50 pounds. LANDSCAPING BARRELS may NOT be used.

Will there be a limit to how many containers of recyclables can be placed at the curb?

There is never a maximum on recycling items.

I prefer to separate my recyclables, will they still collect them?

Yes.

Plastic Food Containers #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 and #7 (except styrofoam which is sometimes labeled #6)

Empty yogurt, cottage cheese and margarine containers can be placed with recycling instead of ending up in the garbage and taking up space in a landfill. Plastic food containers with a recycling symbol from 1 to 5 are accepted for recycling. (Due to a previously adopted state law, all plastic food containers must have a recycling symbol with a number from 1 to 7 (except styrofoam which is sometimes labeled #6) indicating the type of plastic resin it is made of. Wyckoff has been recycling plastic containers coded #1 and #2 since those recyclable markets have been available.) In addition to the recyclable items mentioned, some of the other recyclable items that will be accepted are: frozen whipped topping containers, some plastic storage containers, medicine bottles (be sure to remove the label or cross out any personal information) and some take-out or fruit containers. Be sure to check the symbol on the bottom of the container before discarding. Although plastic pipes used for toys, sporting equipment and plumbing jobs are made of PVC (#3), they cannot be placed with the recyclables since the recycling market will not accept them.
