Smart Buying Habits are an Important Recycling Link

The collection of recyclable materials in and of itself cannot sustain a recycling program. It must be accompanied by purchasing habits that support the recycling system, the intersection of supply and demand. We must create a demand for these collectable recyclable materials. Industries must be encouraged to reuse materials rather than purchasing virgin materials. How do we as consumers expedite the process? Our buying habits will foster an environment for increased manufacture of recyclable products. If we choose a product made from recyclable materials over a product that is not, the manufacturer will get the message. If we ask our employers, governments and schools to do the same we are doing our part. Akin to recycling is the concept of "Source Reduction." Source Reduction is a philosophy that seeks to reduce waste by conserving energy and product consumption. It asks us to be more efficient in our using habits. Some examples of source reduction:

• Mowing the lawn with a mulching mower and leaving the clippings on the lawn
• Buying in bulk, therefore having a minimum of packaging
• Double-siding all copying to reduce paper use
• Buying and using reusable products rather than disposable products
• Finding alternative uses for what otherwise would be discarded
• Donating items with a useful life to a non-profit group rather than discarding them
• Buying long-life products such as long-life light bulbs, rechargeable batteries, etc.

Do your part to make the system work by changing your habits towards reducing and reusing.
